Summer Travel and Books: A Perfect Pairing

This blog has been going for over a decade, yet it was only quite recently that I had the idea of writing a fun post about two of my favorite things: travel and books. Summer is a great time for travel (and reading), so here we are. For a word nerd/book worm like me, who also loves to get out and have some adventures, this post is the perfect marriage combing these favorite pastimes of mine.

Here are some books about travel which I’ve read and would recommend. Bonus points if you read them while traveling. 🙂

  • The Tenth Island by Diana Marcum
  • Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park by Conor Knighton
  • Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders by Joshua Foer
  • No Map, Great Trip by Paul Fleischman
  • Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman by Alice Steinbach
  • Falling Off the Map: Some Lonely Places of the World by Pico Iyer
  • Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
  • No Baggage: A Minimalist Tale of Love and Wandering by Clara Bensen
  • Four Seasons in Rome: On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World by Anthony Doerr
  • The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost: A Memoir of Three Continents, Two Friends, and One Unexpected Adventure by Rachel Friedman
    • I am currently reading this one, so the jury’s still out on whether or not it belongs on this list. So far, it’s pretty good.

As for my own travels, last summer we went on a rather amazing 3-week trip of the Azores, Lisbon, and Madrid. I wrote all about it, so be sure to check out my posts. As for this summer, our plans are shorter and much less grand, but will (hopefully) still be fun: we are going on a road trip! We’re going to check out Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and some other places in between.

Are you going anywhere this summer? Reading anything good? Feel free to share in the comments below. Let me know what you think of my list, too, or if you have any suggestions for our trip.

As always, thanks for stopping by. ❤

  1. We love our Atlas Obscura! Took the Vegas/Grand Canyon/Monument Valley trip last summer ourselves and it was awesome. We went during monsoon season so got caught in a few thunder storms while we were there. It made the scenery even more beautiful 🙂
