I’m “old school.” Does anyone even use that expression anymore?
Recently my friends and I were talking about being from Generation X, and we decided we were glad to have been raised a certain way and in a certain era. Saturday morning cartoons and a bowl of cereal. Riding around the neighborhood on our bikes. Dressing nicely to go to church. Lisa Frank and Sanrio. Blowing into video game cartridges to get them to work. No one had to tell us not to eat laundry pods. We didn’t have to worry about our embarrassing moments being broadcast and immortalized all over the Internet…

Don’t get me wrong, life is still plenty good as an adult. I’m blessed and grateful for this life. Here are some ways I consider myself to be old school:
- I enjoy doing things like hand writing letters to my friends and cousins, as well as sending them birthday cards. I also write “thank you” cards.
- Reading a physical book is way better than a digital version. There’s something comforting about the tactile sensation of book pages, the way they turn, and even how they smell.
- My car has a CD player, and that’s how I play my carefully curated CD collection.
- I still use a dictionary.
- Not many people use the word “Pardon?” when they don’t understand or didn’t hear something properly, but I do.
- They basically only get used for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but my fine china dishes are also old school.
- To cover one of her school textbooks, I suggested to my daughter that she use a paper bag. She looked at me like I was crazy.
- In the summer, the clothesline in our backyard gets used for drying some stuff like swimsuits and swim towels.
- Homemade jam is my thing. It’s a lot of work, but there’s satisfaction in picking nectarines from the trees in my backyard, processing them into jam, and canning the jars myself.
- These are some OG things in my house: a tea pot, fountain pen, iron and ironing board, typewriter, manual orange juicer, photo albums, DVDs and even one VHS, two film cameras and a canister of film, and an address book.
- This blog is old school. People are more into podcasts and TikTok videos these days. Yet here I am, writing for the world, when only a handful of people will actually read this.
Can you relate to any of these? What sorts of ways are you old school? Leave a comment below.
As always, thanks for stopping by. ❤
Hi Cousin! I totally agree with you that the majority of things I do and say are way “old school”. My soon to be 20 year old laughs at me when my stories begin with “back in my day”.
I sniff books, too!! Old book smell is a great idea for a candle. Haha
Keep being you, Cuz!!
